Whitley County Marriage License Rules
Whitley County marriage licenses are handled by the Clerk of Courts. The official process begins with the Indiana online marriage-license application portal, then both applicants appear together at the Whitley County Clerk's Office, Room 10, on the second floor of the courthouse. The in-person completion times are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Residency controls where a couple may apply. For Indiana residents, at least one applicant must live in Whitley County and provide documentation of that Whitley County residency. Indiana residents from another county cannot apply in Whitley County. Out-of-state residents may apply in Whitley County only if the ceremony will be performed in Whitley County.
The official Whitley County Marriage Licenses page screenshot is the local source for the online-start rule, in-person completion step, fees, ID, validity, and officiant notes.
The county source is important because it narrows the statewide application process to Whitley County residency, office hours, and copy rules.
Apply for a Whitley Marriage License
The license is issued the same day after the online application and in-person review are complete. Both applicants should bring accepted identification and any needed residency proof. The county accepts a valid operator's license or Indiana state identification showing date of birth and current Whitley County address, passport, military identification, or birth certificate. Applicants under 18 must have a court order.
- Start the application through the Indiana MyCourts marriage-license portal.
- Gather accepted photo ID, birth-date proof, and Whitley County residency documentation when applying as an Indiana resident.
- Both applicants appear together at Clerk Room 10 at 101 W Van Buren Street during the posted marriage-license times.
- Pay the resident or out-of-state fee by cash, money order, or credit/debit card, with card fee when used.
- Use the license within 60 days. The marriage must be performed in Indiana.
- Order additional certified copies from the correct office if more than the included copy is needed.
Note: The Clerk closes for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m., so the marriage-license completion window skips that hour.
Whitley Marriage Application Fields
The state portal collects the application data before the county Clerk finalizes the license. Some fields are personal identifiers and some are used to decide whether Whitley County is the proper issuing county. The online entry does not replace the required in-person completion by both applicants.

The online form is only the start; the local Clerk verifies identity, residency or ceremony location, payment, and issuance requirements.

Whitley County Marriage and Divorce Fees
Marriage-license fees differ by residency. One certified copy is included in the license cost, and additional certified marriage copies have a separate local price. Divorce filing fees come from the Clerk's fee schedule and use the dissolution case categories for cases with children and without children. Copy and certification fees apply when a person needs a court-certified divorce decree or other court document.

Search Whitley County Marriage Records
Marriage copies are split by record date. Certified copies from June 2007 to present are handled by the Clerk's office. May 2007 and earlier marriage records are handled by File Management in the basement or lower level of the Whitley County Government Center at 220 W Van Buren St, Columbia City. File Management also lists marriage records from 1836 through June 30, 2010.
Historical marriage material is more detailed than a simple modern certificate copy. The county lists marriage indexes from 1838 through 1910 through historical index links, marriage application books 1 through 4 for 1905 through 1913, marriages for 1860 through 1884, marriages for 1838 through 1910, marriages for 1911 through 1938, and original returns for 1838 through 1846. These ranges make File Management the better channel for genealogy, title, and older family-history work.
- June 2007 to present: request certified marriage copies through the Clerk's office.
- May 2007 and prior: use File Management at the county government center.
- 1836 through 6/30/2010: File Management lists marriage records in that range.
- 1838 through 1910: county historical indexes may help locate older entries.
Find Whitley County Divorce Records
Divorce records are court records. Whitley Circuit Court handles dissolutions involving divorce and custody, while Whitley Superior Court hears dissolutions of marriage. A recent divorce case may be searched through MyCase or through public computers at the Clerk's office. Older dissolution records may require File Management, especially where the research identifies Circuit Court Civil Order Books listing dissolution of marriages from 1874 through 1989.
Divorce filings use the local court system and may use Indiana self-service forms for self-represented parties. The county Court Forms page links form packets for Divorce, Child Support and Name Change and notes that forms must be typed. Attorneys use Indiana e-filing where required, while pro se filings are accepted in the office under the Clerk research.
Divorce files can include petitions, appearances, summons, parenting matters, support issues, settlement terms, orders, decree entries, and hearing notices. Child-related details, protected identifiers, sealed filings, and confidential family information may be restricted under Indiana court-access rules.
A divorce search should start with the names of the parties and an approximate filing or decree year. For modern cases, MyCase may show the court, cause number, filing date, hearing events, and disposition. For older cases, the File Management request path is more useful because the archive description is tied to order books and older civil record series rather than a modern online case image.
Filing a new dissolution is different from ordering an old decree. A new case uses the Clerk filing path, typed forms, and the dissolution filing fee. A copy request uses the record location, page count, and certification need. When the decree is needed for a name change, benefits, remarriage, property issue, or another legal use, the request should ask for a certified copy rather than a plain printout.
Certified Copies and Officiants
Certified copies are needed when a person must prove a marriage or divorce outcome to another agency, employer, school, court, or financial office. For marriage records, the county states that one certified copy is included in the license cost and each additional certified marriage copy costs $4. For court documents such as a divorce decree, the general copy schedule is $1 per page plus $3 per certification unless a separate official fee applies.
The county marriage page also identifies who may perform marriages. A member of the clergy, including a minister, priest, bishop, rabbi, or imam, may officiate. A judge may officiate, and so may a clerk-treasurer of a city or town. If applicants do not have someone to marry them, the county links a list of people willing to officiate ceremonies.
The access channel depends on the record date and record type. Current marriage copies route to the Clerk. Older marriage files route to File Management. Divorce decrees route through the court record system, and archived dissolution material may also route to File Management. The county's copy rules support mail, in-person, and archive requests when the requester can identify the record clearly enough for staff to pull the right file.

The state-law source supports the local process, but Whitley County's Clerk page controls the local application steps, fees, and copy locations.
